If you're reading this at 3am with a baby who won't settle, or scrolling through Google for "baby sleep consultant near me" while your toddler screams in the background — I see you. You're exhausted, you've tried everything the internet told you to try, and you just want someone to tell you it's going to be OK.
It is going to be OK. And finding the right sleep consultant can make all the difference — not just for your baby's sleep, but for your confidence, your wellbeing, and your whole family.
My name is Dee Booth. I'm a paediatric sleep consultant and parenting coach based in Reading, Berkshire, and I've been helping families with sleep and behaviour since 2009. I offer in-home visits within 100 miles of Reading and online consultations across the UK and worldwide. But before I tell you about how I work, let me share what I think every parent should know when choosing a sleep consultant.
What Does a Baby Sleep Consultant Actually Do?
A sleep consultant isn't someone who comes in and takes over. A good one works alongside you, looking at the full picture — your child's age, temperament, feeding, routine, health, and your family's values — and helps you build a plan that works for your life, not a textbook.
That might mean adjusting nap timing, rethinking the bedtime routine, addressing an underlying issue like reflux or allergies, or simply giving you the confidence to be consistent with an approach you've already started. Every family is different, and the plan should reflect that.
What to Look For When Searching for a Sleep Consultant Near You
There are hundreds of sleep consultants in the UK now, and quality varies enormously. Here are the things I'd encourage you to look for.
Experience with your child's age group
A newborn's sleep needs are completely different from a toddler's. Some consultants specialise in the first year; others work across a wider age range. At Sleep Fairy, I work with children from birth right through to age 11, because sleep and behaviour challenges don't stop at 12 months.
An approach that matches your values
This is really important. Some consultants use controlled crying or extinction methods. If that doesn't sit right with you, make sure the person you choose offers genuinely gentle, attachment-based support. At Sleep Fairy, we never ask you to leave your child to cry. Our methods are designed to protect your bond while still helping your child learn to sleep better.
Ongoing support, not just a one-off session
A sleep plan is only useful if you can actually implement it — and that's where most parents struggle. Look for a consultant who offers follow-up support over several weeks. Things rarely go perfectly on night one, and having someone in your corner to troubleshoot, adjust the plan, and reassure you makes all the difference. All our packages include at least 8 weeks of follow-up support by phone and WhatsApp.
Experience with additional needs
If your child has reflux, allergies, autism, ADHD, or any other additional needs, make sure your consultant has specific experience in this area. These children often need a different approach, and generic sleep advice can actually make things worse. I have personal experience of parenting children with ADHD and autism, which gives me a deeper understanding of the challenges you face.
Why an In-Home Visit Can Make a Real Difference
Many sleep consultants only offer online sessions and very few actually see the babies they make the plans for. There's nothing wrong with that — and I offer online consultations too — but I always see the babies and toddlers I'm helping and observe how they respond to a new way of being put to bed before creating a sleep plan for them. There's also something powerful about having someone come to your home. I can see your child's sleep environment, watch how you interact with them, get a feeling for their temperament, observe the family dynamic, and pick up on things that would never come through on a video call with just the parents.
Our in-home sessions typically last 3 to 5 hours, which gives us time to really understand what's going on and put changes into practice while I'm there with you. I visit families across the South of England, within about 100 miles of Reading. I will travel worldwide for Intensive Support packages.
